A Letter from Archbishop Lucas

December 9, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am happy to present this revised Gender Policy for Schools. The policy applies to the 52 archdiocesan elementary schools and 12 co-ed high schools in the Archdiocese of Omaha. The policy is to be communicated to school communities for implementation in the 2023-24 school year. The non-archdiocesan high schools can use this policy as a template as they articulate their own policies over the coming months, according to their established procedures.

This policy for schools balances the pastoral needs and obligations of parents, guardians, students, and school leaders within the mission of the Church. It acknowledges our responsibility to uphold Catholic teaching in our schools, which are an important manifestation of the ministry of Jesus. The policy expresses our continuing determination for our schools to partner with parents whose children face special challenges, to the extent that we are able to do so.

I am proud of the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Omaha. Our dedicated teachers and administrators see it as a privilege to partner with parents to teach and form their children according to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are committed to ongoing formation for this important task and to teaching the truth in love as Jesus does.

With prayers for a blessed Advent and Christmas, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend George J. Lucas Archbishop of Omaha
